The Recurring Revenue Opportunity Channel Partners Can't Afford to Miss

The Recurring Revenue Opportunity Channel Partners Can't Afford to Miss

For most of the broadband era, enterprise connectivity came down to a geographic lottery. Which cable franchise held the local territory determined your options. One provider, one product tier, one set of terms.

5G has changed that. Not through a single capability, but through the simultaneous maturation of two complementary modes that together cover the full spectrum of enterprise connectivity. Where a site once had one wired option, it now has multiple independent carrier paths at the same address, each with distinct spectrum and different infrastructure.

The question is no longer which cable company to sign with. It's which managed connectivity partner has the expertise to operate multi-carrier 5G wireless WAN at scale. Channel partners who move to answer that question first are the ones who will own these accounts.

Why this window is narrower than it looks

Enterprise connectivity decisions tend to be sticky. When a customer is live on the managed solution, hardware deployed, SIMs provisioned, support relationship established, they are not switching providers casually. The partner who establishes the relationship now holds it for five to ten years.

Two forces are compressing the window. First, 5G coverage has matured. The carrier coverage excuse is largely gone in North America. Nationwide multi-carrier coverage now reaches most commercial locations. Second, enterprise appetite for OpEx models has accelerated. IT teams that once guarded CapEx budgets are actively preferring subscription-based infrastructure now.

Partners who establish a managed connectivity practice in 2026 and 2027 will define this category in their markets. That window will not stay open indefinitely.

5G eMBB delivers multi-gigabit throughput genuinely competitive with fiber-class DIA at an increasing share of commercial addresses. 5G RedCap, standardized in 3GPP Release 17, brings cellular-grade reliability to the sensor-dense, bandwidth-constrained edge. Advanced capabilities like eSIM, Network Slicing, and 5G RedCap are not talking points in a future roadmap. They are live capabilities that Managed Connectivity Platform channel partners can offer customers today.

Why building this in-house doesn't pencil out

Here's the friction point that keeps many channel partners on the sideline: the infrastructure required to deliver managed cellular connectivity at enterprise scale is genuinely complex to construct. eSIM integration carrier negotiation across multiple networks, 24/7 NOC operations, certified enterprise-grade hardware management, and lifecycle support from deployment through refresh. Channel partners who have tried to do this themselves have learned that the investment often exceeds the business case for the first several years.

The better path is partnering with an organization that has already built that stack. That's not a concession. It's the same model that has driven every successful managed services category from backup-as-a-service to SD-WAN.

  • No NOC requirement. Bring a managed 5G offering to accounts without adding headcount.
  • No inventory burden. Hardware ships in as few as three business days and can be ordered one unit at a time, eliminating the need to forecast demand, carry stock, or tie up capital in bulk procurement.
  • Pre-certified hardware. Enterprise-grade, pre-tested hardware eliminates the qualification burden and gets you to revenue faster.
  • Multi-carrier from day one. Access to carrier-diverse 5G networks without negotiating individual contracts across carriers.
  • OpEx model for your customers. Deliver managed connectivity as a predictable monthly subscription, the commercial structure enterprise buyers want.
  • Recurring revenue, not one-time margins. Monthly recurring connectivity revenue compounds over time, increasing the lifetime value of every account in your portfolio.

Where managed cellular is already winning

Kiosks and vending
Self-service kiosks and vending machines are deployed in high-traffic locations where wired connectivity is impractical or unavailable. Managed 5G keeps payment processing, inventory telemetry, and remote diagnostics running continuously, with no on-site IT staff required.

Retail and multi-location commerce
Every minute a point-of-sale system is offline costs revenue. Multi-location operators, from quick-service restaurants to specialty chains, are adopting managed 5G as primary connectivity, gaining instant failover and remote troubleshooting without dispatching technicians to individual locations.

EV charging and solar
EV charging stations and distributed solar installations are deployed across parking lots, highways, and commercial sites where fiber is rarely available and downtime has direct revenue consequences. Managed 5G keeps charging sessions active, energy telemetry flowing, and remote management available regardless of site location.

What these verticals share isn’t just a connectivity need. It's a support model requirement. They can't staff technicians at every machine. They don’t want each location managing its own carrier relationship. They need a channel partner who delivers on uptime, not just the hardware.

That's the business model shift a managed solution enables for the channel. You're no longer selling a router. You're delivering uptime as a service.

The channel partner who owns the connectivity relationship owns the account. Managed cellular isn't a product line. It's the foundation of every other service you sell.

Built for every part of the channel

Not every channel partner comes to the Digi Ventus Managed Connectivity Platform from the same position. A VAR with deep enterprise relationships but no managed services practice has different needs than an MSP already running a NOC, or a reseller looking to add a recurring revenue line without operational overhead. The platform is structured to meet each of those starting points specifically.

That flexibility extends to how data is sourced. Channel partners who want Digi Ventus to handle everything, including carrier data, get the full end-to-end experience. Channel partners who already have carrier relationships or preferred data agreements can bring their own data and still access Digi hardware on a subscription basis, along with the full monitoring, support, and device management stack.

Value-Added Resellers

VARs are often the first call when an enterprise IT team needs a connectivity recommendation. The challenge is converting that trusted-advisor role into a recurring revenue position without standing up a managed services operation from scratch.

The Managed Connectivity Platform gives VARs a fully managed, white-label connectivity offering they can bring to existing accounts immediately. Hardware, carrier relationships, 24x7x365 monitoring and support handled by Digi. The VAR owns the customer relationship and earns monthly recurring revenue on every connected site.

MSPs and managed service channel partners

MSPs already understand recurring revenue. The gap is typically at the cellular WAN layer: multi-carrier SIM management, eSIM provisioning, cellular-specific monitoring and carrier-grade SLA support are operationally distinct from what most MSP NOCs are built to handle.

The Managed Connectivity Platform fills that gap without requiring MSPs to rebuild their operations. Genesis monitoring provides centralized visibility across every connected site. Digi SureLink handles uptime at the device layer. MSPs retain the customer relationship and expand their managed portfolio without absorbing cellular WAN complexity into their own stack.

For MSPs with existing carrier agreements or preferred data plans, the platform also supports a bring-your-own-data model. Digi hardware is available on a subscription basis. Partners layer in their own data, preserving existing carrier relationships and pricing while gaining access to the full Managed Connectivity Platform stack.

No bulk order requirement. Hardware ships within three business days, so MSPs can move at the pace of their customers.

Resellers

Resellers who are not running managed services operations today can still capture recurring connectivity revenue. The model is straightforward: resellers bring the customer opportunity and the Managed Connectivity Platform delivers the connectivity service end to end, including hardware, carrier connectivity, provisioning, monitoring and ongoing support.

No infrastructure investment required. Resellers earn a margin on every subscription, backed by enterprise-grade service delivery and 40 years of Digi operational experience. That’s what customers are buying confidence in when they sign a managed connectivity agreement.

The bottom line

The managed connectivity opportunity is real. It's growing faster than most channel partners have modeled, and the vertical demand is not waiting for anyone to get comfortable. Enterprise customers are making these decisions now, and they're making them with partners who have already demonstrated capability.

For channel partners who want to establish durable recurring revenue and deepen customer relationships, the path forward isn't to watch this category mature from the sideline. The question worth asking your team this quarter isn't whether 5G cellular WAN is a viable offering. It's whether you want to be the partner your customers trust to deliver it, or the one they went somewhere else to find.
